I have all kinds of trouble if I stay too far right. I think the center is safer. I think drivers think you want to share the lane with them when you are too far right.

Almost got thwacked by an asshat SUV today. I was in the straight-ahead lane, leaving the right turn lane open for right turners. Past the intersection, I began to drift to the right to the striped zone. Was passed by a SUV going about 40, my head a foot or so from his mirror. I think, around here, I am going to take the center of the right-turn lane regardless.
