I'm surprised that there aren't a lot of bikes in the < 5 cents per mile range. I see someone at 4 and someone at 8 and 12.5...
First road bike (a bike from around 1970 that I found in my parent's garage and fixed up when I was in Jr. high): 0 cents per mile
Second road bike in high school: Purchased new for $500, ridden maybe 10000-15000 miles in 2-3 years before it got stolen... ball park of 3-5 cents per mile. Hugely sad to have a bike only 2-3 years old stolen... (didn't get my money's worth!)
high school/college road/race bike/current. Purchased for $700 (on sale), put in probably 10,0000 miles/yr for 2 years, then 5,000 miles/year the next 2-3 years as my primary sport switched to running but didn't have a car. Got a car and mountain bike so this bike started seeing even fewer miles until I left it at home 6 years ago when I moved and and only brought along my mountain bike. Ridden when I visit home. Probably 40,000 miles, so ~1.75 cents per mile.
Next road bike will cost much more per mile as running is still #1 for me in the summer and 4-6 months of the year is xc ski season.
