For the record, I too enjoy the benefits of keeping up with training, just because it's so nice to have that reserve, ready and on tap.

On yesterday's club ride, I paced myself in the first 20 miles, mainly due to the heat and humidity. At one point I judged the gap to be 45 seconds or so. Eventually they slowed and I reeled them in.

In the middle of the ride was one big monster hill. I easily cruised to the top, dropping everyone else, and waited for the rest under a shade tree.

And I was in my 50+ summer-weight jersey.
