I have that set up primarily because my FD brifter is broken and I did not want to spend the money for a new/replacement one. I also did not wan to deal with the bar tape and I guess Im just lazy and cheap when it comes to some bikes.
I would do it for this reason, but there'd definitely not be a weight savings by simply adding a downtube shifter and leaving the ergo or double tap front levels in place. Makes me think all those "rear/right only" shifters on eBay aren't so useless after all.
