it's going to be different for different stems, depending on the angle of the rise and the reach. For me it's (unfortunately) just a matter of trial and error. I lucked out with my univega build and the stock stem was perfect, but for my Jamis I had to get a shorter stem because the top tube is slightly longer.

on all three stems the position of the main vertical shaft (with the min insert point and the allen head) was different
