Length is horizontal, front to back, rather than up and down. A longer front to back measurement will result in the bars being significantly higher, as mtb stems are angled upwards.

If you look at my Cimarron, you will notice the vertical section is no longer than the one on your Trek, its the long angled section that makes all the difference. In addition, my bars make about a 180 degree drop, while yours is more like 135 degrees. Notice the top section of my bars is horizontal to the levers, while yours is angled down. Yet my drops are at about the same angle as yours. If you rotated your bars up to make the top section horizontal, you will find the drops would angle down a lot.

My bar choice was limited to what I had in hand, that had the right clamp diameter (to match the stock stem).
