There's things you can do to your bike to better handle longer distances.
Skinnier tires will roll easier and a "bit" faster. The degree depends on what you already have and what you switch to. (Less weight to accelerate too)
Change the cassette to more "road" type gears if you don't have monster hills. That allows you to ride a cadence that is more efficient.
