NOOB from jersey looking to find a new way to work

Hey everyone I have decided that I want to start riding to work which is about an 8 mile ride to get back in shape before I start taking physical exams. I have only owned bmx bikes and a few walmart mountain bikes that i've been given for free lol. I need direction on what kind of bike to get I'm really looking for something that gets up in speed but is good for long distance. I've looked around and think a hybrid and a touring bike would be best but I also want to be up right but kind of leaning forward just a tad (if that makes sense). The bike I've picked so far was the cheapest bike on Bikes Direct because I am still on the fence about doing this and I will sometimes have the bike with me when I go to class, rutgers newark, so I don't want to risk having something expensive get stolen. I also don't want to cut too deep into my pockets because thats bill money lol. My biggest question is how can I tell how fast a bike will be going and should I be worried about getting a bike from bikes direct?

Heres the bike mentioned;
