I understand that they had to put new laws on the books to accommodate cars and their interactions with pedestrians. I hadn't realized that "jaywalking" was a derogatory term or that society, in general had such a low regard for rural folks. I guess I had kind of thought "country bumpkin" as an almost endearing term, (maybe that's because of my growing up in Texas).
