It''s probable that in the 14th cen. Black Death, mortality rates were similar in the countryside and in cities. Remember that at that time, only about 3% of the people lived in cities.
Also, for survivors the aftermath of that particular pandemic was good times. The severe labor shortage resulted in fantastic wages and much improved working/living conditions for the remaining population.
Since we are just wool gathering, I was simply restating what the history channel or Discovery broadcast about the black death. The rich left to their country estates and put guards on the roads to make sure no one came to infect them. Much like thye did in the post I made about the shootings on the Bridge during Katrina. In almost every apocalyptic movie I have ever seen the cities are where it the most dangerous. The zombies live there. There is no wages because there is no work and no one to work for. In New York they put up walls to keep the warlords inside and away from the civilized people. Mad Max types in hockey masks and Giant Mohawks wonder around looking for someone's skull to crush and so a cyclist would make good fodder for jumping out and skull crushing. Mad escaped soldiers with twin 50s on alcohol power jeeps just look for rabbit looking people to shoot at. In the Postman they left the cities and formed tribe like cities with massive walls to keep out "strangers" or people that looked different. Waiting for the government to reform. In the Omega man you had to travel by day and stay out of the stores as it got dark. You had to build a high fortress to keep the infected ones out. So getting out of the cities and to where the food supply will be is paramount, at least if it is a apocalypse, nuclear, disease, comet, asteroid, world war, Global flooding, Global freezing, yes I am a Sci Fi junky and have seen them all. Didn't see many bikes or life going on as normal in the big cities.
