Easy to confuse volume with width. If you've got extra width, that's not going to work real well, but extra volume can be handled a little easier insoles and tighter lacing in some cases. I think many bike shoes have gone to high arch support because of the stiffness in the bottom. If you're not operating with any real cushioning on a stiff platform, you've got to hold the arch up.
