It's a cost-benefit thing: Since I already have the helmet, the cost is a bit of discomfort. The benefit is potentially not ending up a vegetable if something weird happens. I've cracked one helmet myself, and I've seen several people go down, some of them experienced cyclists, and those who had helmets fared better than those who didn't. To me, it's worth it for some level of increased safety. Yes, I know, I can still be injured if I wear a helmet; it's a matter of degrees.
For those who choose not to wear one, well go for it. Just keep riding and good luck to ya.
Riding location also factors into the equation. If I rode my bike in traffic then a helmet would make a heck of a lot of sense and I would likely wear one. In two years of riding a motorcycle I got rear-ended twice. Too many idiots out there driving 3000 lb cars.
