We get boxes from our local bike shop to travel to our destination at no charge, they are throwing them out anyway. On our return journey we bag our bikes, little more risk here but lot's of cardboard helps, we take our derailleurs off so they don't get damaged. Ours are the tardis bag from Ground Effect but imagine there are quite a few others around. We carry the bags with us so no hanging around or having to organise anything bar some tape and cardboard which is usually not difficult to find. We have done this quite a few times, once my bike was damaged but it was on the homeward bound sector and it was able to be fixed when we got back. Hope that helps.
