Plenty of people commute on road bikes. I don't think you'll gain much in time over a one mile ride.

Could you lock out the suspension on your DS? I'd be a little wary of a bike that sat in the shop for a year and then was traded back in a year after purchase. Would the LBS let you rent it for a week to try out?
