Two short rides or one long ride?
Hi all, I'm new here. I've been cycling for a long time, but this May I decided to try to get into racing shape. I've been reading Joe Friel's Bible, and it's told me I should be in a "base building" phase for a long time, with lots of slow distance, with a lot of zone 2 but also zones 1 and 3. I still have some questions and here's a straightforward one.
My workplace is 25 miles from my house, with a lot of bike paths on the way. I usually park my car halfway and take a 12.5 mile ride to work and later back to my car. I could also drive to work with my bike in the trunk, ride it all the way home, and then all the way back to work in the morning. There's other combination options, like two 25 mile rides per day, or one 12.5 mile ride per day. (I also take a day or two off during the week, and do a 5000 ft mountain climb on the weekend.) Which of these options do you think is best for base building?
A: Two 12.5 mile rides per day. This might be better than B because the rest between makes the workouts higher quality somehow.
B: One 25 mile ride per day. This takes more endurance than A.
C: Some combination of A and B.
D: Something completely different. Please specify.
