The analogy of wearing a pro team kit to your favorite football team is not exactly a good one for the simple reason that when you are wearing a pro team kit, you are on your bike riding like the pros are doing, but when you put on your favorite football team jersey, in all likelihood, you are NOT playing football.
However, I do have a few jerseys from pro teams that I support, and I do wear them when riding. But I don't typically get the full kit with matching socks and gloves. That would be crossing the line into the "poser" territory.
When I play pick up hockey, virtually all of us have an NHL jersey on of one era or another, and not a single damn is given because everyone knows you don't play for the team and aren't pretending to. You're probably just a fan of the team/player/color/city, and that's all there is to it.
Cycling is the only sport I can think of that sees things this way, and it just happens to be one of the most pretentious sports I'm involved in.
