Yes, I had to spread the fork a bit and also the dropouts. The original hub has a smaller than normal axle length and also smaller than normal axle diameter. The mods weren't very hard to make.

The difference is night and day. I ride this bike FAST with complete confidence. Before, I rode it with uncomfortable trepidation. The original brakes are unconscionably poor.
I would highly recommend that if you even remotely plan to put lights on it to go ahead and purchase a dyno-drum hub. X-FDD or XL-FDD. The last one I bought came from Niagara Cycle. The price difference between an X-FD and an X-FDD is only about $15.
