I was towing a large trailer. I probably could have gotten past them right before the bridge. But it was marginal. There was also some additional traffic behind me. I used the trailer and truck to keep those vehicles from passing until after the bridge when it was safer to do so. You could wave the driver on it you wish. But I would much rather have a driver pace me than cut me off.

Yes clearly. But in my post, the street was long and straight. Not even sure why the city chose the the double stripe. The expectation of drivers is often that the bicycle should pull over and let them pass.
Of course, as drivers see more cyclists, this expectation becomes futile and they learn to deal with bikes more realistically.
However, every once in a while, a driver appears out of Mars or Venus, and we have to start all over again.
