I think the narrow wide chainrings(RF, Wolftooth, XX1) might actually help more than any other piece of the 1x setup. Prior to getting my NW rings in, I was running a Salsa SS chainring along with the XT shadow plus and did drop the chain a few times over the course of a couple rides. Just yesterday, I installed a NW ring on my buddy's Tallboy carbon without a shadow plus or type2 derailleur -- just a standard long cage XT. According to Pinkbike, they tested with and without clutch derailleurs, and never had a drop.

He didn't have any drops on our ride yesterday, but only time will tell how it works out on my friends bike. He is a very fast and aggressive rider, so if that chain can be thrown, he will throw it.
