I was hiking in Grand Teton once and saw a baby grizzly.
So I recommend bear mace or if you don't care about the law, a high caliber pistol.

Check adventure forums.
Bears, moose, elk, wolves, rednecks, etc. might consider you prey or a threat.
Over in the touring forum, there was a wolf that attacked a cyclist.
