Whatever told you that you burned 500 calories is probably lying. And likely by quite a bit. The (relatively accurate) calorie estimates from my power meter are always 30-50% below everything else I've looked at. My old Polar HRM was the worst: it's calorie estimates were always 2X what the power meter said! For a "500 calorie" ride, I probably wouldn't eat any additional calories unless I was excruciatingly hungry...
