IME there are two ways to approach these.

1- move over far earlier flagging your intention to stay on the main (left) road. or
2- staying to the right as long as possible, until well into the split, then looking for an opportunity to make a dash across the lanes back to the main road. This may entail stopping and waiting on the right for a gap in traffic.

What you've proven, is that signalling and expecting courtesy from drivers doesn't work.
