This borders on what they want to do here in Lincoln Ne. The Neb Dept of Roads is planning to build a very much needed south beltway to get heavy thru traffic out of what is now becoming the the center of town. The only problem is, is the fact they want to designate it a "freeway" which means no bikes. The bigger problem is that it seals off the whole south part of town from the southwest to the southeast. It leaves no hard surface routes for cyclist to get onto the hiways going south or the one going southeast.

I attended a meeting presented by NDOR that had plans drawn up of the proposed "freeway". It showed two 12' driving lanes, and also a 12' shoulder. Even with 2' rumble strips, that would leave 10' of shoulder for bikes to ride on. That means bikes would mainly be at least 8' from traffic. The supid part is that by calling it a "freeway" which is just a word, it bans bikes. No one ever said b'crats were smart.
