Before I met her, my wife went to a shop to buy a commuting bike. They outfitted her with a so-so choice. She specifically asked them if they could fix a rack to it, because she saw herself wanting to put a rack on it once she got some more money (she was hard up for cash at the time). A few months later, she took it back for the rack and they told her they couldn't fit one on that kind of bike...well, maybe they could. If she bought a rack, they'd try (and charge her) but no promises and she'd still be stuck with the rack and labor if it didn't work out. She didn't get it and was pretty pissed. Later, after she met me, we sold that bike and got her one that met her needs better. I haven't been back to that LBS and steer others (mostly not bike familiar people who ask me) away from it. With an LBS, I just remember they need to make money...sometimes, to them (and staff), that means doing good work and building loyal customers. For others, that sometimes just means getting something out the door irrespective of anything else. Buyer beware. If you can, make yourself a knowledgeable consumer before heading into the store. Of course, after gaining that knowledge, you've removed the benefit of the LBS "service" and it is just better to order what you want online. And if you don't feel like gaining that knowledge, sometimes you're better off not buying anything at all.
