I believe joejack is mistaken as to the reason for "compact" in the names of the bikes. It is likely referencing the compact (sloping top tube) frame style. But compact cranks are becoming the standard in entry and even higher level bikes for a reason. I switched 5/6 years ago before the rage and have never regretted it. Specialized's website lists a compact (50/34) crank and 12-28 cassette, which should be more than adequate for rolling terrain.

Yes, carbon forks do mute the road surface buzz and imperfections much more than alloy forks, and are well worth the generally higher cost, IMHO.
