I'm talking about recreational group rides where a bunch of guys go for a two abreast ride at 6:30 PM on busy roads when other options exist. I cringe as a driver when I see these guys, it's very common in my area. If you really can't ride at any other time, at least pick a route of back roads, go in single file and try the stay the hell out of the way.
Sorry, I guess I tend to look at things through the lens of a solo rider. And maybe I'm a little bit touchy about "get off the road!" What you described is irritating. (So is that one guy in the middle of the lane on the road immediately next to an empty MUP.)
I do think it's ok (but impracticable and not fun) for a cyclist to do a joy or exercise ride during rush hour if that's the only time they have available. I've driven out of town after work to go hiking, which put me in grid lock at rush hour. No one objected because I was in a car. I don't do it anymore because it's so unpleasant for me. But I feel like if I'm allowed to have my car on busy streets at rush hour for my own pleasure in my car, people should be allowed to do basically the same thing on bikes.
Anyway, I have this awful feeling I'm starting to sound like A&S so I'll stop now.
