I'm with you, northeaster. When I started touring in the 70's it was with cotton shorts (not good). Since then I've tried lots of things. Bike shorts worked, but the tight Lycra annoyed me during long days on the bike and setting up camp. I'm much more comfortable with synthetic boxers (i.e. coolmax) under a pair of loose nylon shorts.
