WD-40 will work as a rust inhibitor if there is no existing rust. I remember working at a hardware store as a teen. The store owner wrote "WD-40 prevents rust" with WD-40 on a bare-metal paint can and left it outside in the rain and weather. After about a month, the can rusted except for the area that was treated with WD-40 and you could read "WS-40 prevents rust" by the shiny treated area.
