Bikes: Trek 1.1

Gravelly sound/feeling

Hey bike forum,

I did a search on this and came up with nothing useful.

I've been going crazy ever since I recently cleaned and lubed my chain and its been making an awful gravelly sound when traveling over the cogs. It also pops, making a vibration that can be felt throughout the bike. It only happens when the chain is traveling "clockwise" I.e. driving the wheel. When I freewheel it backwards, it does not make the noise. If I take the back wheel off and run the chain through the derailleur and chainrings it does not make the sound

So far I've tried re-lubricating the chain, removing the derailleur hanger and greasing the bolt (suggested by a friend) and adjusting the limit screws of the derailleur. The derailleur hanger is not bent. The chain is not stretched and is relatively new. The chain was almost completely silent before I cleaned and lubricated it.

The bike is a stock Trek 1.1 with a Sun Race CSR86 12-25, 8 speed cassette and shimano 2300 derailleur.

Please help me so I can ride with peace of mind again!
