I think that's the essence of the "Its not the bike it's the motor" argument. At some level it just won't matter if you've taken a pound off a bike. I can ride my old steel downtube roadie as fast as I can ride my carbon fiber one. There's about a 4-5 pound difference. But both are all out roadies from their respective eras, except the carbon climbs better.
