On the sunday recovery ride, a group of 4 pretty serious guys with their tongues on the road passed quickly. I often let a 500m gap develop if a good looking group passes, then chase. If the group is hammering, the effort I have to make is like bridging in a race which is one of the more painful things in life. Sometimes you catch them, sometimes you don't, but it's a great character builder. Just as I caught on the group after a pretty hard 5 minute effort, the 4th rider launched which is very much like the sequence of a race. It was clear that their group had a routine going. The others accelerated, but couldn't hold #4's wheel. I asked if they minded if I took a pull, so we did a group bridging-like effort and we catch him in about 2k. A great workout for awhile, and enough hard work for me after a long Saturday ride. I pulled out and continued on a nice 50k recovery ride. They had stopped up the road a bit, and as I passed, we all exchanged a proper greeting. Good fun and really blew the cobwebs out.
