I don't understand why you would call a Cannondale or Trek or whatever "Buying American". Aside from some frames, every single parts is made elsewhere. I bet that little american flag sticker is made in China.
I'm very happy with my Cannondale MTB, I think they do a better job at mid-level bikes than Trek. Customer support is very good and I think they understand aluminum technology better than Trek.
Other than that, the bicycle market is so competitive, that at any single price point, there are very subtle differences.
