Hey Grant! Question about the 94 XO4 buddy!

Or anyone else who has some advice.
I'm partially rebuilding a ox4 that originally had rapid shifters on it's arc style bars. The seven speed shift is shot even after cleaning. The arc style bar is missing too. I do have a couple of drop bars and can afford a few vintage stem shifters from ebay (I don't think I can afford bar end shifters cuz "spending money on old bikes is stupid"). Yeah yeah ....but anyway will the hybrid's derailers still function well with a stem mounted shifter that doesn't go click click click? And if I need to get a road bike derailer(s) will it work with the bikes gears? The back wheel needs to be replaced also. And to spice things up, I have a set of old 700 (six speed) road wheels in the garage. Any ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated and I almost forgot! Here's a link to the Xo in its originality. One of Bridgestone's last! Nice looking bike.
