It'd keep crap from getting into the cut and possibly making it worse.
I'd also keep an eye on it - it looks like it may be deep enough to have damaged if not actually cut through the tire's cords. If it starts bulging, the cords are cut and the tire needs to be replaced.
FWIW, the probability of fatally cutting a tire is proportional to its cost and inversely proportional to the number fo miles on the tire.
