The need for a thin spacer under the stem depends on the stem and headset. The first item above the centering cone has to touch only that. Most stems would be OK, but I have seen stem/headse combinations that want ta spacer in between.
Thanks. I have a small one under the stem now (5mm I think). I'm going to remove that and see how it fits and probably wait another week or two to cut. I'v read that having too much steerer above the stem can weaken the stem but maybe that is just full carbon fork/steerer or particular stems?
