I have been considering buying a new bike next year, but I think I would prefer to search out a vintage bike to meet my needs before committing to a new bike.
I weigh 300 pounds, and have targetted 210 for my goal weight, so I will never be a small rider. I am 6' tall, so a bike that came in a 23" or 58cm size would be nice (I don't expect the size to be an issue with any make/model).
My needs are relatively minimal, any vintage ten speed with a long wheel base and decent ride would probably meet the need. I would hope to use the bike for weekend rides, commuting and a few organized centuries each year. I would like the capability to do some unsupported touring and perhaps my grocery shopping as well, so all of the proper mounting points for racks and fenders would be nice too.
I would expect to upgrade a couple of items. Specifically, I am spoiled by indexed shifting... I also expect as I get more time in the saddle to move to clipless pedals. Other than these two items, I think a vintage ride is my cup of tea!
I built my own beater bike, including lacing my own wheels in the 70's, so I don't mind tinkering, and I think a nice vintage ride would give me the freedom to do it without worrying about it too much.
Do you have any advice on what models or features to look for (or avoid) on eBay and/or thrift stores etc?
Thanks!
