Regarding the trunk rack, I used to do that to (tossing it in the trunk). Eventually I bought a really long cable lock that I could thread through the rack I was using (Saris Bones) and lock it to a hook under the bumper. That's still not very secure, but it at least deters opportunistic thieves.
