If your knees are OK, give it a try. Personally, I love gears, so singlespeed would be out. The Troll gives you the option to run SS or geared.
yeah, headwinds do suck. maybe what i really need is a CX disc brake bike with clearances/braze-ons for fenders.

EEBs come in several varieties. Set screws are hard to set, the internal wedge style can get stuck unless they have a wedge release function. I prefer the external clamp ones.
my Scott SUB 10 has an external clamp EBB, and i still can't get the damn thing to stay put. i think i just ride way too hard for any kind of EBB; i'm out of the saddle a lot bunny hopping over pot-holes, jumping off curbs, hammering to catch a green light, etc. i abuse bottom brackets, so i think i need a good old fashioned stationary one. if i had to do it all over again, i would have bought an IGH bike with sliding rear drops.
