Indeed. These work far better than any "vintage" sidepull brake:

If you have your heart set on "period correct" brakes, Dia-Compe 500G were the go-to brake back then. Not extremely powerful, but quite common. If you find some, make sure you get all the parts for the QR. They tend to lose pieces if they're not tied together.
