Can I swap the rims so that I may use a more standard (i.e. easy found) tire size[/color], such as 26" MTB tires? That way, I don't have to worry about going through tires, and having to special order 597s each time I need a new pair. Also, by not using the original Schwinn rims, they are protected from damage. I can then store them for later, should I ever want to return my Racer to 'original' condition.

I can think of two possible issues with this swapping wheels/tires idea:
  1. This model bike has fenders (as seen in the picture above) If I swap rims, will the new wheels/tires fit (and look right) with the existing fenders?
  2. How will this work with the coaster brakes? I'm less familiar with how coasters work. Does the rear rim have to have something special built into the hub in order for the coasters to work?
Help me save this classic from neglect!
26" MTB wheels are quite a lot smaller, 559 mm vs 597. I wouldn't recommend that.

My advice would be to go with either the 590 (English 26 x 1 3/8) or 622 (700c) size. I would expect either to fit the frame and fenders. If you want to make it "racy" go for 622.

The coaster brake is part of the hub, has nothing to do with the rims.

If it doesn't already have one, I would strongly advise installing a front hand brake.
