Today (Sunday) Rowan and I did a 70.62 km ride around the neighbourhood. It was a beautiful spring day with a high of 18C and light winds. Everything is brilliant green, flowers are blooming, and the trees are about to burst into leaf.
Our ride took us up and over one of the main hills in our town, and down to an old, historic bridge which has been recently refurbished. We stopped to take some photos there. Estimates are that the bridge is about 100 years old, and needed quite a bit of work.
Not long after we left the bridge, a long, snaking shadow crossed over us. We looked up and were treated to the sight of a large flock of ibis flying silently and beautifully in a V formation.
Up and over another hill and we were in Taggerty. Taggerty is a very small town and sometimes we stop there for ice cream, but this time we were feeling good so we kept cycling ... up and over a long hill with some very scenic views. After a lovely descent, we were in Thornton, where we made a brief stop.
From there we decided to take the Eildon front road which is a little hillier than the back road. So, up and over another hill, and then we were cycling along the Goulburn River ... and then the lower pondages. Very pretty.
By the time we got into Eildon, at about the 45 km point, we were quite hungry so we stopped at the local takeaway for potato cakes, dim sims, and minimum hot chips. While there a cockatoo and magpie dropped in to do a bit of scavenging.
I probably ate a little bit too much, because the return trip had a bit of a slow start. Fortunately we chose the Eildon back road which is flatter ... it follows the Goulburn more closely. And then it was up and over another hill back into the town where we live.
That is the longest distance we have cycled in a while, so my legs are a little bit tired.
