Saturday, I rode in the Baltimore Bike Club's
Civil War Century, which is an annual event the first Saturday following Labor Day. It was cool in the early am, but warmed up to become a charming day with light winds. The ride goes from Thurmont, MD over some hilly terrain to Sharpsburg (Antietam), where it turns northward then northeast to Gettysburg, with a little more climbing between. The final 25 miles are relatively flat. The food was good, and the route markings were excellent.
1600 riders. The imperial century was 104 miles with ~7000 feet of climbing advertised. Here's a photo at Gettysburg with a work friend that I met by chance at the 53-mile rest stop. We rode the 2nd half together. The background is Little Round Top, the site where Chamberlain, his ammunition depleted and line thinned, held the Union's left flank in a furious bayonet charge downward. PG
