Short is officially for double cranks and all cogs except 13-29 (and presumably the new 12-30) although some people have successfully run that combination (your derailleur hanger length affects what will work).

Medium is for double cranks with all cogs and triple cranks all except 13-29. The Racing-T derailleur was a medium.

Long works for everything.
