Yes, it saves lives. Still, that does not make saving gas (which equates to money, even if you are not a tree hugger like me) an insignificant matter. Neither is the reduction of carbon footprint. Given your apparent background, I doubt that you are a global warming denier. I may be wrong as there are a lot of very scientifically educated people who are well paid by the petro industry to deny it.
