Brifters come in all shapes and sizes, even the Campy/Sram made by Campy ones.
And I think your making it that much more problematic by going for maximum coggage.

I have a couple of bikes of that age that were "updated" before they came to me.
They work fine, but I think the max for cogs/chain on the back is a couple of eights.

I actually did not buy an attractively priced bike once primarily because of the 9
on the back,my reluctance to make all the changes involved to go to 8,
and my desires to keep my multi bike world a little bit simpler. Feel free to differ.
