I'm a bit surprised at all the flack you are getting here. I've also blown way more money on other hobbies where the "return on investment" is virtually nil. At least with bikes, a vintage frame with modern components will get you back at least half what you put into it. I've built up older frames where I'm certain I could sell the bike for more than I had into it in the end (helps when you get the bike for a steal).
