I find that anything over 7% looks like it's straight up, especially if I've been on a flat stretch. But when I actually start riding it, I can pretty easily tell the difference between 8%, 15%, and 20%.

The nice thing is that the more climbing you do, the smaller the grades seem to be. There are hills around me that used to seem really daunting and are now part of an ordinary, everyday ride.
