The Cat system went into place a few years ago now. It took a while to iron it out a bit. There were cat 1/2 road racers and expert mountain bike racers that didn't know where to start and there were a gazillion cat 4's. so they added the cat 5 this year. That is for USAC races. Most grass routs events still use an ABC system.
