Clips and straps with the proper shoes are just as good as clipless just not as convenient and easy to get in and out of. Also clipless are more safe in the event of an accident as you easily just pop out. If you are strapped in pretty good you don't come out so easily.
I typically just use running shoes in my clips n straps. With the straps just slightly tight, I find the sole compresses just enough for the pedal cage to bite into it a bit and provide decent retention that's not too tough to release from.

Some talk about never going back from clipless, but I do it all the time, moving pedals around from bike to bike, etc. During STXC season I had SPDs on both my racing MTBs, clips an straps on roadie and fixie, platforms on townie MTB.

Now I also have platforms on the roadie, cuz I wanted to get somewhere quickly wearing my work boots.

Will soon be reconfiguring to SPDs on roadie and one MTB, clips-n-straps on fixie, platforms on one XC MTB, platforms on Townie MTB.

If some nice $10 or cheaper SPDs fall into my lap they may go on the fixed gear next.
