The only homebrew triples I have ever done used long stack bolts and spacers, which restricted me to the same BCD for all three rings. I was fond of a third-step variation on half-step, such as: 49-46-43/13-16-19-23-26, which gave me 14 usable ratios with an incredibly smooth ratiometric progression.
